Balancing our Chakras
Chakras are our energy centers. They are the openings for life energy to flow into and out of our aura. Their function is to vitalize the physical body and to bring about the development of our self-consciousness. They are associated with our physical, mental and emotional interactions. There are seven major chakras. The chakras can have various levels of activity. When they're "open," they're considered operative in a normal fashion.
Ideally, all chakras would contribute to our being. Our instincts would work together with our feelings and thinking. However, this is usually not the case. Some chakras are not open enough (being under-active), and to compensate, other chakras are over-active. The ideal state is where the chakras are balanced. There exist lots of techniques to balance the chakras. Mostly techniques to open chakras are used. It makes no sense to try to make over-active chakras less active, as they are compensating for other chakras. To restore the compensation they'd be over-active again in no time. To stop them from compensating, the chakras they are compensating for must be opened. Below are a few techniques to assist with balancing chakras. |
Root Chakra
ROOT CHAKRA "MULADHARA"
The 1st Chakra, the Root Chakra, represents our foundation and is all about feeling grounded and secure. Here's the quick skinny on what you need to know about Root Chakra healing: Location of our Root Chakra: Base of spine in tailbone area What affects our Root Chakra: Survival issues, such as money and food Color: Red Healing Exercises:

What Happens When Your Root Chakra is Closed?
Today, survival is often financially driven. If you are finding it difficult to get by and you struggle under constant financial pressure, your root chakra may be blocked. When you struggle financially, you are under tremendous stress and this stress taxes your adrenal glands, leading to weight gain, depression, low energy, and low self-esteem. A lack of money can damage your sense of security, and burdens you with guilt and shame. People with closed root chakras often find that this situation continually perpetuates itself. Even if your finances are in order, a closed root chakra can manifest in unsatisfactory relationships, a chaotic home environment, or a profound lack of the courage and self-confidence necessary to pursue your dreams. Since the root chakra drives our basic needs of sustenance and connection to others, you may experience problems like poor body image and unsatisfactory relationships. You may struggle to separate your own difficulties with those of others, and occasionally find yourself carrying burdens which are not yours to carry. The result of a blocked root chakra can be diminished self-confidence, guilt, hopelessness, overwhelm, resentment and depression as well as physical problems such as adrenal fatigue, Epstein-Barr virus, Crohn’s disease and cancer. |
Over-Active Root Chakra:
If the root chakra is over-active you may experience anger, annoyance and even aggression towards people and events in your life. Greediness and controlling others and becoming biligerant to those who challenge your “authority” may be a problem. You might become dependant on the security from other people, your job, or specific habits and because of this you will have very rigid boundaries – making it very difficult for you to accept change. You may also become very materialistic or impulsive and think that your value or self-worth exists in having such things. Problems with an over-active sex drive may arise due to the over-activeness of the root chakra.
Under-Active Root Chakra:
If your root chakra is under-active you may feel disconnected from the world around you, including from your body. You will feel disorganized and consequently this will reflect in your world. You will lack focus and discipline and you may even become afraid, anxious or restless in your daily interactions. You will probably experience a lack of stamina, depression or desire to do or to want anything out of life. You will have trouble obtaining financial security and will find yourself with no, or very little boundaries.
Physical symptoms of an Imbalance:
Weight-loss/gain, over or under-active sex drive, poor immune system, anemia, depression, laziness, irritable bowel syndrome are all possible physical symptoms of an imbalance within the root chakra.

This chakra is responsible for your survival and acts as a grounding force.
When you feel fear, are worried that you will not be able to pay your bills on time, when you feel you need to compete and are worried about other problems associated with survival, it means your root chakra is not functioning properly.
If you cannot manifest things, it also means that this chakra is blocked.
When your root chakra is in alignment, then you do not have fear, problems solve themselves and you are not worried about small things like bills.
5 Ways to Clear, Open, and Balance Your Root Chakra
If you feel you would benefit from clearing your first chakra, there are many practical, every-day things that you can do. Here are five ideas:
*walk, especially walk barefoot in nature
*mindfully eat healthy food, especially root vegetables or healthy "comfort food"
*create healthy order or structure in your life or home, such as creating a filing system or putting up shelves in the garage or basement
*repeat affirmations such as: "I am safe." " The universe is a good place." "Everything is going to work out just fine." "The universe provides for me abundantly." "All is well and I can let down my guard and rest."
*surround yourself with pleasing, earthy smells, such as essential oils of cedar, clove, or patchouli.

Diet and Base Chakras
The base, or root chakra, is all about keeping us grounded. It’s about our connection to the earth, stability, survival in the world. A good way to energize this chakra is by eating root vegetables like beets, carrots, potatoes, onions, and garlic. Red is the color associated with the root chakra, so red foods are also helpful. Pomegranates are a good example. Also red spices like cayenne pepper and hot paprika are good for stimulating the root chakra.
SACRAL CHAKRA
SACRAL CHAKRA "SVADISTHANA"
The 2nd Chakra, the Sacral Chakra, relates to our ability to feel creative, sexual, and accept change. Here's what you need to know about Sacral Chakra healing: Location of our Sacral Chakra: Lower abdomen, about 2 inches below the navel and 2 inches in. Emotional issues affecting our Sacral Chakra: Sense of abundance, well-being, pleasure, sexuality. Color: Orange Healing Exercises:
|
Over-Active Sacral Chakra:If you have an over-active sacral chakra you may tend to be over emotional, creating drama over people or events that happen in your life. You’ll probably have an unhealthy emotional attachment to people and will become out-of-sorts if someone doesn’t show up on time or if your plans don’t work out. Sexual addiction may be a problem if you are in a relationship or not taking proper caution with your partner(s). Mental, emotional or physical tension of muscles will be another sign that things aren’t in balance.
Under-Active Sacral Chakra:If your Svandisthana is under active you may experience a fear of pleasure and deny yourself from the things that can make you feel good! (And you’ll make up any excuse not to have something you really want). You will probably lack creativity, feel sluggish, lazy or suffer from chronic fatigue disorder and have a weak sex drive. “Fitting in” with people may rule your daily interactions and you will find it hard to be your true or authentic self. You’ll find that trying to stand out requires the necessary energy that comes from a properly functioning naval chakra. You can’t manifest what you desire because your thoughts and emotions tend to lean towards negativity. Physical Symptoms of an Imbalance: An unbalanced in this chakra may manifest as aches or pains in the lower abdomen with irregular menstruation cycles or bladder, urinary and kidney infections. More serious conditions are infertility, ovarian cysts, endometriosis, ectopic pregnancy, pre-menstrual syndrome, testicular or prostate disease. |
Second chakra is called sacral chakra.
It is located at the lower part of the stomach and is responsible for your emotions. Whenever you feel extreme emotions then it means this chakra is not balanced properly.
If you are obsessed about something, hate some person or feel too attached to someone, it means there is something wrong with your sacral chakra.
Also, when this chakra is not functioning properly you may be suffering from the obsession with sex or low self-esteem.
When this chakra is functioning properly, you feel calm, peaceful and do not have any unbalanced emotions. You are creative and happy with yourself.
Balancing the Chakras
Yoga poses to open the second chakraYoga for sacral chakra healing should focus on hip opening poses like Upavistha Konasana, or Open Angle Pose. Baddha Konasana, or Bound Angle Pose, is another simple but useful pose. Yoga practice for second chakra healing should be slow and relaxed rather than fast or overly challenging.
Balance your other chakras.
A severe imbalance in one chakra almost always means imbalances in other chakras as well. (They work as a system.) Your throat chakra in particular has strong connections to your sacral chakra. The next time you practice your deep hip-opening posture of choice, notice if you feel a release in your throat area as well (double pigeon/fire log pose is wonderful for this). You can also try working a pose like bridge that allows you to connect with many of your chakras at one time; flowing slowly in and out of the posture as you connect your breath and movement.
Essential Oil For Chakra Healing
Sandalwood, patchouli, orange, rose and ylang-ylang essential oils can be used as aromatherapy for second chakra healing. These can be used alone, in meditation, and in conjunction with chakra crystals.
Meditation
Meditation is very useful for chakra cleansing and balancing. For example, a simple sacral chakra healing meditation consists in envisioning an orange lotus or orange crescent moon in the area of the second chakra in the pelvis area. Hold that image in your mind for a few minutes while breathing deeply.
Dance like no one’s watching
Dancing is one of the best—and easiest—ways to open your sacral chakra. So close the door, turn on your favorite music, and move. For double the cleansing effects, get out with friends as you move your hips to your favorite rhythm.
Water
Water is a Second Chakra Element Since the sacral chakra’s element is water, getting outside and relaxing near open water can help open your second chakra. Lakes, rivers, streams or the ocean are all useful. If possible, wade in or dangle your feet in the water to help the energy flow. Taking a bath or a shower can also contribute to balancing your chakra while providing the relaxation needed to keep your emotions flowing.
Healing Shame in the second chakra
Some of us might also feel shame and guilt around pleasure due to strict education, contradictory values, or a traumatic experience. Repressed sexuality can lead to serious imbalances in the second chakra, whether it “shuts down” or becomes overactive.
The energy of your second chakra can be shut down or blocked as a result of sexual repression, whether this movement of contraction has been influenced by the actions of someone in your life or is self-imposed. Chakra healing is important to restore a healthy image of sexuality and pleasure.
Working on trust around sex and sensuality with your partner or sharing your concerns with a trusted friend or professional could be helpful. Going step by step, starting with small experiences of pleasure might pave the way to healing big wounds.

The sacral chakra is associated with both creativity and creation. This includes sexuality, and reproduction. Orange is the color that goes with the sacral chakra, so orange foods will help to keep this chakra healthy and flourishing. Fruits like mango and oranges are great. And fruits that have lots of seeds are also good, like passion fruit, and strawberries. Cinnamon, vanilla, and sesame seeds also help to stimulate creativity.
SOLAR PLEXUS
SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA "MANIPURA"
The 3rd Chakra, the Solar Plexus Chakra, represents our ability to be confident and in control of our lives. Here's what you need to know about Solar Plexus Chakra healing: Location of our Solar Plexus Chakra: Upper abdomen in the stomach area. What affects our Solar Plexus Chakra: Self-worth, self-confidence, self-esteem. Color: Yellow Healing Exercises:

Your solar plexus chakra is activated:
Look around you at the people who are successful in whatever they do: they stand tall, speak with conviction and strength and look others straight in the eye. Their personal power is strong and they are comfortable using it! By the way, personal power does not mean power over others; it means self-mastery – the ability to master your thoughts and emotions, overcome any fear and take appropriate action in any situation. The Sanskrit word for the solar plexus is Manipura, translated as ‘shining gem’, a fitting term for this particular chakra. You may have heard the phrase, “no pressure, no diamonds” – the solar plexus chakra gives you the ability to rise to the occasion in times of need and difficulty or anytime you are challenged. |
When this Chakra is in balance
you will be in complete control over your emotions and thoughts. Your ego mind, or small mind will have no unwanted influence over your actions. You will know without a doubt, and accept your place in the Universe, have self-love and, in turn, have a great appreciation for all the people in your life and the uniqueness that they bring to world. When in tune, your Solar-plexus will radiate warmth and joy through-out your entire being, and to others who come into contact with you.
Over-active Solar-plexus Chakra
If your chakra is over-active you may be judgemental or critical – and you will easily find fault in others. You may be demanding and have extreme emotional problems, being very rigid or stubborn (it’s either your way or no way). Often anger, or aggressiveness result from an over-active chakra. You may always be planning to do things, but never doing, and your work or interests become a priority over things you have to do (a workaholic). You may also be a perfectionist and can’t settle on something that is already good enough, it always has to be better.
Under-active Solar-plexus Chakra
If this chakra is under active it can cause severe emotional problems. You may have a lot of doubt and mistrust towards the people in your life, and worry too much about what other people might think about you. You may also run on “auto pilot” avoiding your feelings of depression or anxiety; you may feel afraid or alone when you start to look at what you have been avoiding. You also may feel that you are not good enough and be seeking a constant approval of others, this can lead to a need, or dependency on the people in your life.
Physical Symptoms of a Solar-plexus imbalance:
Poor digestion, weight problems, ulcers, diabetes, hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, arthritis, pacreas, liver or kidney problems, anorexia, bulimia, hepatitis, intestinal tumours, colon disease.

Healing the Solar Plexus Chakra
By concentrating your attention on healing your solar plexus chakra, you can overcome shyness. You can make your voice heard. You can freely express yourself. You can boldly take on new challenges. You can achieve your goals. You can succeed. And, you can regain your personal power.
How can you overcome your shyness or lack of self-confidence, or temper your over-compensatory behavior?
Healing this chakra requires you to work on your self-confidence. One very effective approach is to set goals that challenge you a little and excite you a lot, and take small, consistent steps to achievement. You’ll gain confidence as you see progress!
What to do if your solar plexus is blocked? Practice smiling more, better posture, and slowly you will gain confidence!
Work on the “fake it ‘til you make it” approach. This is not bravado or overcompensation; it’s simply acting the part even before you embody the part.
Do this by:
However, avoid singing your own praises because this can lead to overcompensation and a tendency to praise yourself without backing your words up with results.
If you’re already on the other end of the spectrum and you overcompensate for your feelings of inadequacy, know that a blocked solar plexus chakra can cause you to behave in potentially selfish and harmful ways. Whenever you feel the urge to boast about your accomplishments in front of others, STOP. Be humble. Let your achievements speak for you – and if you haven’t achieved anything worth speaking about, take on a goal that excites and motivates you, and start taking steps toward it.
Aromatherapy for the Third Eye:
Angelic root, bay laurel, clary sage, cypress, elimi, frankincense, helichrysum, juniper, marjoram, patchouli, rosemary, sandalwood, vetiver.
Other ways to open the solar plexus chakra:
When your third chakra is open, you are assertive without being unfair or overbearing, you are respected without having to demand it, you are not crushed by failures or mistakes, you recognize your positive attributes and you are satisfied, happy and peaceful.

Heart Chakra "ANAHATA"
The 4th Chakra, the Heart Chakra, represents our ability to love — the quality of our love, our past loves — and our future loves. More About the Heart Chakra
The fourth chakra is at the center of the seven chakras with three below and three above. This is the area where physical and spiritual meet. The fourth chakra, also referred to as the heart chakra, is located at the center of the chest and includes the heart, cardiac plexus, thymus gland, lungs, and breasts. It also rules the lymphatic system. The Sanskrit word for the fourth chakra is Anahata, which means “unstruck” or “unhurt.” The name implies that beneath the hurts and grievances of past experiences lies a pure and spiritual place where no hurt exists. When your heart chakra is open, you are flowing with love and compassion, you are quick to forgive, and you accept others and yourself. A closed heart chakra can give way to grief, anger, jealousy, fear of betrayal, and hatred toward yourself and others |
Asanas, Sounds, Colors, and Gems to Balance the Fourth Chakra
Any yoga pose that opens the area of the chest will help to balance the heart chakra. Some poses include camel, standing bow pose, and cow face pose.
The mantra sound corresponding to the fourth chakra is the sound YUM. A special mantra to help expand love and compassion is OM MANI PADME HUM. You can repeat this mantra in meditation to gain greater access to these qualities.
The color is emerald green and the gemstones associated with the heart are emerald, malachite, jade, and rose quartz.
Ask yourself some of these questions:
In loving ourselves we allow the intent to generate the feeling of unconditional love within us, and then to share this feeling with others. Whatever we send out is returned to us.
What does healing the heart chakra mean?
Healing the heart chakra may mean several things and refers to many different techniques. We will cover the main ones and remain as practical as possible. Heart chakra healing is sometimes also referred to as balancing, opening, or clearing. The main idea behind healing the heart chakra is to restore flow of energy and overall balance.
Why do we need heart chakra healing?
The heart chakra is particularly vulnerable to disturbances associated with relationships and love. We all have a history of relationships from the moment we’re born to now. During our history, there were many events and opportunities for positive or negative experiences regarding love and relating to others.
As we encounter life difficulties, we have two main ways to cope: We may shut down or decrease the energy that we dedicate to the situation, or we may boost or increase our energy to fight it. These defense mechanisms get anchored in our chakras.
In the case of the heart chakra, we might have felt hurt during childhood or a recent breakup and closed our chakra to numb our pain and avoid suffering. Or on the opposite side, we may have opened and extended our heart energy to a demanding partner or parent in need, sometimes to the point of over-extending and being drained.
Over time, these defense mechanisms can cause imbalance in the heart chakra and other chakras, leading to an overactive, deficient or blocked chakra. One may tend to have excess or deficiency in the heart chakra, or both depending on the situation and coping mechanism.

Ask yourself some of these questions:
- What emotional memories do I need to heal?
- What relationships current or past require healing?
- Are my emotional wounds taking over, causing me to try and control people or situations around me?
- Do I allow the wounds of others to control me? How do I let that happen?
- What do I need to forgive myself for? Who needs forgiving from me?

When the heart chakra becomes unbalanced, this may lead to emotional, physical or even existential distress. The energy running though this chakra is not flowing freely and you may feel drained, depleted, stuck in thoughts or behavioral patterns.
To overcome a blockage, excess or deficiency in the heart chakra, the energy needs to:
- Be able to move freely (one may need to loosen up constrictions or interferences, such as continuous stress, physical muscle tension, improper diet, negative influence of others, limiting beliefs or attitude)
- Move in a patters that is suitable to this chakra
- Be balanced with other energies (we need to take into consideration the whole chakra and energy system; for instance, stress or imbalance in neighboring chakras might influence the state of the heart chakra)
Going green to soothe hyperactivity in the heart chakra
Air is the element of the Anahata or heart chakra, so getting outdoors and into nature can also help manage an overactive heart chakra. Nature and its green allure are excellent support to harmonize imbalanced energy. Hiking through the forest or simply sitting outside on a nice day restores balance. Even opening a window and letting the fresh air blow through your home or office could give you a good start.
Wearing green or pink, and surrounding yourself with these colors can also help balance the heart chakra. Wearing or meditating with healing crystals like rose quartz, jade, emerald, malachite and other green stones is also beneficial.

If your throat chakra is in balance
you will have no problem expressing yourself in the world! You will be very creative, helpful, and may be good at offering people sound advice when it is asked for. You know what you want out of life and you are not afraid to ask for it, and what you ask for always seems to come to you with no, or little effort on your part! You are not afraid to express your weaknesses and people respect you for this. You are truly free when you can speak your truth. Over-active Throat Chakra: If your throat chakra is over-active you more than likely be over-opinionated, perhaps very critical of others and how they are performing in life. You may be verbally abusive to those around you, and may find yourself yelling a lot when not necessary. You won’t allow others to “talk back” or voice their opinions about certain situations, it will be your way or no way. Under-active Throat Chakra: When under-active, you will be unable to express yourself and will often be misinterpreted or misunderstood by others. You will probably be “wishy washy” or considered “flakey” or unreliable by the people in your life. Telling the truth and being honest with yourself is something you probably have a difficult time with, and giving mixed messages is likely something that has gotten you into trouble before. Until you find balance within the throat chakra, your life will remain the same – and nothing will ever work out in the way you would like it. |
Common Signs of Throat Chakra Blockage
You may find yourself unable to speak your truth when you need it the most, or holding back on expressing your needs and desires. Perhaps, you long for realizing your dreams and living with a strong and clear purpose, but seem to not be able to quite get there. Diet and Throat Chakra
The throat chakra helps us with communication, self-expression, and speaking our truth. The throat needs lots of liquids to stay clear and moist, this can come from water or herbal teas. Adding a bit of lemon or lime to the water is effective for clearing out energy. Fruit juice is also effective, particular when the juice comes from fruit that is grown on trees: apples, pears, peaches, or apricots. Plums, which can reflect the blue-ish color of the throat chakra, are very helpful. A little bit of sea salt or lemon grass is also good for the throat chakra.

Third Eye Imbalance
When the Third Eye chakra produces an excess of energy the mind can go into overdrive. Consider how you feel after one too many cups of coffee and you get the idea. An overactive Ajna chakra can make it difficult to concentrate and, in some cases, can induce hallucinations. On the other end of the spectrum, an energy deficiency can also affect your ability to concentrate on, process, and remember information. An under-active Third Eye chakra can make you indecisive, procrastinate, or become fearful of the unknown. Extremely deficient Ajna chakra function can hinder your ability to focus, keep a cool head under pressure, or dream and recall your dreams. Additional issues that can arise from a blocked or imbalanced Third Eye chakra include:
|
Over-active Ajna
If you have an over active third eye you may experience stress accompanied by frequent headaches that happen in the forehead or temples. You may become delusional and create circumstances in your mind that are not really happening (a mental disease). An individual with over-activity in this chakra may also tend to be judgmental, unsympathetic or over-intellectual in their thinking.
Under-active Ajna
If your third eye is under active you will probably have difficulty in understanding the spiritual side of the world and the connection between your inner and outer reality. You may lack empathy for the people in your life, lack common sense, or intuition. Memory and learning can be affected if the third eye is not balanced.

Diet and Third Eye Chakra
The third eye chakra is all about wisdom and intuition. Since indigo is the color for this chakra, look for dark blue or purple foods to help gain clarity and focus. Blueberries, blackberries, raisins, prunes and purple grapes are especially good. Grape juice works as well. Poppy seeds and lavender also help us to stimulate our intuition and to tune in to the wisdom of the Universe.
CROWN CHAKRA - "SAHASRARA"
CROWN CHAKRA - "SAHASRARA"
The 7th and highest Chakra, the Crown Chakra, represents our ability to be fully connected spiritually. Here's what you need to know about opening and healing the Crown Chakra: The location of our Crown Chakra: The very top of our head What affects our Crown Chakra: Inner and outer beauty, our connection to spirituality, pure bliss Color: Violet Healing Exercises: Healing Foods: Since the Crown Chakra represents our spiritual connection to our surroundings, this Chakra does not benefit from healing foods. The Crown Chakra is more likely to benefit from breathing clean and fresh air and sunshine. |
When your Sahasrara is in balance you
will have a great intuitive knowledge, and will be very wise. You will be aware of your spiritual self and be selflessly devoted to the well-being of others because you see them as a part of you, rather than as separate. Over-active Sahasrara: If your crown chakra is over-active you probably will not be able to control your encounters with other realms of existence. You may be considered “far out” there and will have trouble grounding yourself, making it hard for people to take you seriously. Because of an over-activity in this chakra, you may possess a god-complex and consider yourself better than others in the world around you. Under-active Sahasrara: If under-activity or a blockage is happening in your crown chakra you will probably feel like you lack a purpose in life. You may think that it is all meaningless, and in this thinking, will develop a mental “disease”. You may feel unloved, or angry at God, and blame life circumstance on something that is outside of you. Co-ordination difficulties, clumsiness, or poor balance may result from an underactive crown chakra. New ideas or newer, positive out-looks on life will be hard for you grasp, if you except them at all. You will probably lack spiritual exploration and have no desire to discover your inner self. You may also be excessively afraid of dying. |
Healing the Crown Chakra
The most powerful way to heal the crown chakra is through meditation. This is because of the ties between the crown chakra and spirituality. Regular meditation practice of all sorts is beneficial. For a meditation focused on Sahasrara, envision white light pouring into the top of your head, filling your body and connecting you with the world around you. If you only have a few moments to meditate, try imagining a violet lotus flower over your crown for a simple chakra meditation.
Unlike other chakras, the crown chakra does not have any healing food specific to it. This is because of its role in spiritual nourishment. Nurturing the body with wholesome, healthy foods while focusing on spiritual things can help heal this chakra.
Silence is best for crown chakra activation, because it does not distract from spiritual practice. The sound of Om and deep, tonal sounds can also be healing music for Sahasrara because of their universal nature.
Most yoga asanas are useful for crown chakra balancing because of the meditative aspect. Slow practice that allows time for plenty of focus on the breath is ideal. This is not the time to push boundaries and strive to achieve difficult poses, but rather to work on mindfulness and meditation.
Aromatherapy for the crown chakra encompasses a wide range of scents. Flowery essential oils like jasmine, rose and lavender can soothe an overactive crown chakra, while more pungent essential oils like sandalwood, frankincense and myrrh can help stimulate an underactive or blocked Sahasrara.
The crown chakra’s elements are thought and light, so spending time in the sunlight is good for opening the crown chakra. Reading or doing puzzles outside on a sunny day is an easy way to help heal the crown chakra.

Diet and Crown Chakra
The crown chakra is our connection with Spirit, the Divine, or our Higher Self. The color of the crown chakra is light violet, so violet foods are helpful in keeping the channel open and clear. But the crown chakra also likes a rest from food. So giving the body a break by eating light meals, like soups and broths, for a day helps the crown chakra to become energized. Meditation, yoga, journaling, and pranayama are also good for stimulating the crown chakra. Clearing your environment with incense like sage, myrrh, juniper or frankincense is also helpful.
